How do I get a cash advance from my American Express card?

We want to make getting a cash advance from your American Express card as easy as possible.

If you have a checking or savings account with us, you can transfer money from your American Express card using mobile or online banking. See also: How do I transfer money between my U.S. Bank accounts?

To make an internal transfer using digital banking

  1. Online banking: Select Transfer& pay from the top of the page, then Internal transfers.
    U.S. Bank Mobile App: Select Pay bills & transfer from the bottom of the dashboard, then Transfer money.
  2. Choose which account to transfer funds from, and which account to send them to.
  3. Enter the amount to transfer, change the frequency (if applicable), and change the date (if applicable).
  4. Online banking: Select Next. Review the information. If correct, select Send transfer.
    U.S. Bank Mobile App: Select Transfer to complete it.

If you have access to an ATM with the American Express logo, you can take a cash advance in person, using your PIN. To find out if there’s one near you, use American Express's ATM locator.

  1. Navigate to http://network.americanexpress.com/en/atm_locator.
  2. In the upper left corner of the page, select the crosshair icon.
    • The crosshair icon will use location services to determine the search results.
    • If location services are turned off, enter your ZIP code or address in the search field and select Go.

If you've received convenience checks linked to your American Express card, you can use them to take a cash advance. Write one to yourself and take it to your bank. Deposit or cash it just as you would for a check someone wrote to you.
