How do I buy or order foreign currency?

Foreign currency can be purchased whenever it’s convenient for you.

Before you get started, here's some important information to keep in mind:

  • Business deposit account holders must purchase foreign currency from a U.S. Bank branch.
  • The person who places the order must be the same person who picks it up and we’ll ask for valid identification. This process is in place to keep funds secure and ensure the right person receives them.
  • The minimum order subtotal must be $20 USD.
  • Foreign coins are not accepted for payment.
  • Various types of currency is limited and subject to change.
    • Some may not be available to buy or exchange due to foreign exchange controls.
    • Some currencies can be out of stock.

To buy or order foreign currency using online banking and the U.S. Bank Mobile App

  1. Select the checking or savings account you’d like to use for the purchase, then choose Account.
  2. Scroll to the Services tile and select Get foreign currency.
  3. Below "Start your exchange":
    1. In the Currency field, start typing the name of the currency you need.
    2. Select the name of the currency from the list provided.
    3. Enter the USD amount or the foreign currency amount you want.
      • The exchange rate is listed below the amounts.
      • Because we round the currency amount to avoid foreign coins, your subtotal may be less than what you entered. If that subtotal is less than $20 USD, you’ll need to increase your purchase amount.

        For example, customer A is purchasing Euros(€). They enter $20 USD to purchase. Based on the exchange rate provided ($1 USD = €0.81), that equals €16.15. When it’s added to an order, the amount of Euros is rounded down to €15 to avoid foreign coins. Because this equals $18.58 USD, the purchase amount in USD needs to be increased so it’s equal to or greater than $20 USD.

    4. Choose Add to order.
  4. Within the Order details tile:
    1. Review the details.
    2. Optional: To edit the currency, select Edit.
    3. Optional: To delete the currency, select Remove.
    4. Select Continue when ready.
  5. Below "Payment and pickup":
    1. Choose the account you want to pay from.
    2. Verify the branch that populates is the one you want to go to for pickup. Select Change branch to choose a different one.
    3. Select which phone number we can contact you at when the order is ready.
  6. Within the Order details tile.
    1. Review the details.
      • We’ll give you a day and time to pick it up.
      • There may be an option to get the order sooner for a fee.
    2. Optional: To edit the currency, choose Edit.
    3. Optional: To delete the currency, select Remove.
    4. Optional: To add more currency, choose Add new currency.
    5. Select Continue when ready.
  7. In the pop-up window, review the order details once more. When ready, select Place order.
