The financial confidence crisis.

U.S. Bank surveyed a nationally representative sample of 5,000 American adults from different generations, genders and regions to understand how they’re managing their money in an era of unprecedented uncertainty.

The new American reality: Americans trust their financial decisions but feel a lack of control over external uncertainties.

77% said the current economic environment influences their retirement timeline.

77% said the economy influences where to live, including more affordable parts of the country or tax-friendly states.

75% said the economy influences whether they buy or rent a home.

Redefining success: Success still means stability and fulfillment, but feels just out of reach.

88% say homeownership is a key indicator of financial success, yet 23% have given up on buying a home due to cost.

93% say having enough retirement savings to live comfortably is a key indicator of success.

16% of Americans say they’ve given up on retiring due to financial reasons.

Long-term financial planning: Many Americans feel confident in their ability to manage daily expenses, but long-term financial planning has taken a backseat.

68% have created a household budget to reduce spending.

39% have moved money into safer investments.

Only 37% of non-retired adults are actively planning and saving for retirement.

63% worry they'll have to return to work after retiring, with the percentage trending higher for younger generations.

Planning builds confidence: A financial advisor and financial plan can bring clarity and a feeling of control when everything else feels uncertain.

Those working with an advisor are more confident they can achieve their key goals in the next 5 years.
