Publication names U.S. Bank No. 2 Most Innovative Bank, No. 2 Best Board

December 14, 2021

Bank Director ranks company among the 10 Best National Banks.

U.S. Bank ranked second on the Most Innovative Banks list, second for Best Boards and was named among the 10 Best National Banks in Bank Director’s 2022 RankingBanking The Best Banks study.

The publication cited U.S. Bank initiatives such as real-time payments for merchants, enhancements to its freight payment platform and the voice-activated U.S. Bank Smart Assistant within the mobile app as the reason for the No. 2 score on the Most Innovative Banks list. For the best banks list, the publication chose banks that balance growth and profitability, deliver long-term shareholder value and execute their goals in a safe and sound manner. The publication also examined the factors that drive this performance: growth, leadership, board oversight and — especially in today’s environment — technological innovation.

In the Best Board category, U.S. Bank was recognized as having the most gender-diverse board, with 46% women. The company also scored high marks in the Best Board category for its governance practices, which include annual evaluations and individual self-evaluations that explore topics such as board oversight, information received by directors and effectiveness of meetings.

“Given their role in oversight, strategy and risk management, strong boards are critical to driving performance at the best banks,” Bank Director noted in its report. In its evaluation, the publication took into consideration factors including the diversity of board composition, board-level skills and expertise and the Governance QualityScore and Board Pillar Score, developed by Institutional Shareholder Services to assess governance risk.

The accolades from Bank Director follow Newsweek, which in September named U.S. Bank the Best Regional Bank in America for the second consecutive year and Fortune Magazine, which chose U.S. Bank as one of the 2021 World’s Most Admired Companies, naming it No. 1 in the Superregional Banks industry category for the 11th consecutive year.
