As the partnership marks two years, U.S. Bank and Greenlight continue empowering families to build financial confidence through everyday experiences

As summer brings looser schedules and greater independence for many kids, it also offers families an opportunity to reset routines and weave everyday money lessons into daily life.

Whether it’s counting coins before heading out to the ice cream truck, introducing new chores or opportunities to earn money or helping your teen navigate their first summer job – having the right family banking tools makes all the difference.

That’s why U.S. Bank partners with Greenlight, the family tech company that empowers families to teach their kids about money through their debit card and app. U.S. Bank clients with eligible checking accounts receive complimentary access to Greenlight.

“Teaching smart spending and money habits early isn’t just important – it’s essential,” said Arijit Roy, head of consumer and business banking products at U.S. Bank. “We’re thrilled that more than 110,000 of our clients and their family members are accessing Greenlight through U.S. Bank to help our next greatest generation build confidence, responsibility and healthy money habits that can last a lifetime.”

The demand for hands-on money experience and financial education for kids comes at a time when more than half of today’s adults say money was rarely discussed when they were growing up, according to a recent U.S. Bank survey conducted in partnership with Morning Consult. The survey also found that most parents today say they feel comfortable talking with their kids about money, with learning how to save, how to budget and set financial goals as the top skills parents view as most important.

With Greenlight, kids and teens gain invaluable money management experience while parents benefit from convenience and peace of mind. Parents can easily send money, automate allowance payments, manage chores, set flexible spending controls and get real-time transaction notifications. Kids and teens can put money skills into practice, learning to earn, save and spend wisely – all with parental supervision.

Features available to U.S. Bank Greenlight clients include:

For kids/teens:

  • Request Money and Move Money: Money requests and movement features that make it easier to ask for, send and manage money within the U.S. Bank Mobile App.
  • New earning features: From chores and allowances to first babysitting jobs, expanded earning features help kids learn the value of hard work and earning money.
  • Co-branded custom cards: Co-branded custom debit cards, featuring both the U.S. Bank and Greenlight logos, while still allowing kids and teens to personalize their card design.

For parents:

  • Family Snapshot: Get a quick “at a glance” view of your kids' spending and savings in one spot.
  • Card Lock feature: Instantly lock or unlock your child's card right from the app, giving you peace of mind if a card is lost or misplaced, or if spending needs to be paused.
  • Pay Back: A tool that allows parents to be reimbursed directly to their U.S. Bank checking account when they pay for an expense on their child’s behalf.

As part of the Greenlight user experience, kids and teens can also build financial knowledge through interactive educational challenges and earn rewards in Greenlight Level Up™, an in-app financial literacy game with a best-in-class curriculum.
