Professional football is defined by precision, preparation and performance. But for many players, the most complex decisions they face go beyond what happens on game day. From managing sudden wealth and planning for long-term security to navigating business ventures and life after football, players encounter unique financial decisions throughout their careers.
That reality is what inspired U.S. Bank Financial Edge™—a financial guidance program designed to support players at every stage of their financial journey.
“This program supports players throughout the full arc of their careers—from the beginning to life after football,” said Scott Ford, president of Wealth Management for U.S. Bank. “It blends real-world financial expertise with insights from players and their broader support systems to help them plan for the future both on and off the field.”
Financial Edge is a financial guidance program co-created with the NFL, the NFL Players Association, teams and players themselves. From rookies entering the league to long-retired former players, the program will deliver athlete-informed guidance to help them make confident financial decisions.
Financial Edge offers sessions ranging from large groups to one-on-one sessions and provides direct access to financial professionals who understand the unique pressures, opportunities and decisions players face.
“As someone who has lived the journey from the football field to the next chapter, I understand how important it is for athletes to have trusted guidance as they manage their financial future,” said Steven Israel, former NFL cornerback and Wealth Management consultant at U.S. Bank. “Financial Edge empowers players with the tools, knowledge and support they need both during and after their playing careers.”
The program will cover topics such as understanding cash flow, planning charitable services, saving strategies, building long-term wealth, preparing for life after football and entrepreneurship.
By actively involving players in the development process, Financial Edge will incorporate firsthand perspectives and experiences, ensuring the curriculum directly addresses the unique challenges faced by professional athletes. One such contributor is Fernando Mendoza, who serves as Chief Financial Playmaker. In this consultative role, Mendoza offers insight rooted in his own experience navigating NIL (name, image and likeness) opportunities, financial decision-making and the transition into professional football.
“My journey in football and my education in business and finance showed me that long‑term success comes from discipline and smart decision‑making,” Mendoza said. “Partnering with U.S. Bank is awesome because it gives me an opportunity to lean into both of my passions helping shape the development of the Financial Edge program, designed to support players at every stage of their financial journey.”
Financial Edge reflects a long-term commitment to supporting NFL players throughout their financial journeys. By working collaboratively with the league and its players, U.S. Bank aims to help create a model for financial guidance that is grounded in experience, credibility and trust. For athletes whose careers often unfold under intense pressure, that support can make a meaningful difference, not just during their playing years, but for decades to come.
