How to Keep Your Money Safe Online

Not only is online banking an easy and convenient way to manage your money, it’s secure. Most banks use state-of-the-art technology and go to great lengths to protect their customers’ personal information. But you also need to do your part to keep your financial information safe.

Basic tips for safe online banking

Don’t reveal your passwords to anyone.

It’s like opening the door to your finances. Also, avoid passwords that someone could easily guess, such as your first or last name in any form, or passwords that are all the same letter, all numbers (like your phone number) or shorter than six characters.

Log out of your online banking account when you’re done.

This is especially important if you’re in a public place or are using school computers. But it also includes logging out of your account if you share a dorm room or an apartment with others. (U.S. Bank automatically logs you out of Online Banking after 15 minutes of inactivity, reducing the risk of unauthorized access to your account.)

Check your bank accounts often for unusual transactions.

If you detect an error or if something seems amiss, contact your bank immediately.
