UXDesign Research Team Lead

The UXDesign Research Team Lead plays a key role in creating world-class experiences that engage, influence and delight US Bank customers and internal users. This leader directs a team of researchers who employ a range of techniques to elicit input from bank customers, the general public, front-line bankers, and business stakeholders. This research guides the creation of user experiences that provide useful capabilities and delightful interactions for all those who engage with our omnichannel experiences across digital channels (web, app, mobile, social and others) and physical channels (bank branches, ATMs and more).
As a partner to UXDesign leaders, product managers and their teams, the UXDesign Research Team Lead also brings design thinking, strong collaboration skills, and persuasive peer leadership.
As a leader and manager of people, the UXDesign Research Team Lead builds not only better research methods and tools, but also better talent: coaching, leadership, employee engagement, management administration and recruiting are all key parts of this leadership role.
The UXDesign Research Team Lead reports to the Head of User Experience Design.
  • Lead and inspire a design research practice within a larger UXDesign practice, providing research expertise, tools, techniques best suited to each project/product throughout the year.
  • Drive thought leadership, design thinking & research strategy across the UXDesign practice. Present persuasively and authoritatively to peers and senior leadership, while facilitating collaborative conversation.
  • Partner effectively with business line clients, product & channel management, marketing, analytics, delivery PMO, IT and other teams to strengthen relationships while delivering solid research.
  • Derive measurable objectives against which our research work will be evaluated for success
  • Consistently deliver work that meets or exceeds the stated business goals and which is clearly and objectively measured and reported to prove our return on design investment
  • Direct people and work efforts across multiple research projects to meet business goals; drive excellence in design research; deliver ever better results; and manage project timing, financials and talent resources (employees, contractors and consultants).
  • Manage, hire and develop a high-performing team with appropriate skills. Motivate and engage team members to ensure peak performance and job satisfaction.
  • Advance and maintain a scalable methodology used across all experience design teams, driving to keep it lean, efficient, effective and repeatable.
  • Manage a consistent, repeatable set of research artifacts, evolving them as our design practice changes and grows
  • Evolve the “brand” of the experience design team and create a design-centric culture within the Bank, making ours a team others seek out for collaboration (or even to join our team)

Basic Qualifications
- Master's degree, or equivalent work experience
- 10 or more years of experience in project management and leadership activities
- Five or more years of managerial experience
Preferred Skills/Experience
- 7-10 years’ experience in UX design research with at least 5 years leading and managing both direct and indirect reports
- Extensive background in all facets of research management including knowledge of design methods & strategy
- Expert in a variety of contemporary research methodologies
- Excellent persuasive verbal and written skills, and ability to facilitate collaborative sessions
- Whole-brain thinker: strong analytical and detail-oriented mind-set balanced with appreciation for aesthetics and an empathetic sensibility
- Track record leading multi-disciplinary teams to deliver multiple and/or large-scale projects
- Proven ability to deliver design research in a way that drives and directs better product/project outcomes.
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required in research-focused discipline
- Self-starting problem-solver, able to dive into ambiguous situations, to create order, and to persuade and lead a peer team of business people
- Master’s degree or equivalent experience desired in design research, market research, psychology, social science or another relevant field
