PURPOSE
The Experience Design Director plays a leadership role in creating world-class experiences that engage, influence and delight US Bank customers and internal users. This leader works across digital channels (web, app, mobile, social and others) and physical channels (bank branches, ATMs and more) to deliver a cohesive, anytime, anywhere experience to meet ever-rising customer expectations.
As design leader of the CapEx SWAT team, the Experience Design Director also brings design thinking, strong collaboration skills, and persuasive peer leadership to the team. The CapEx SWAT team’s mission is to more effectively and efficiently develop, package and sell new digital capabilities with the goal of obtaining investment for those with the greatest value to our business.
As a leader and manager of people, the Experience Design Director builds not only better products and solutions but also better talent: coaching, leadership, employee engagement, management administration and recruiting are also key parts of this role.
The Experience Design Director reports to the Head of Omnichannel Experience Design.
 
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Lead UX Design on a “SWAT Team” of UX Designers, business line leaders and product managers charged with
    • defining the broad strokes of our most significant projects,
    • establishing the business benefit and strategic value, and
    • pitching the project to executive management for approval of the capital investment
  • Lead and inspire an experience design practice team across all key areas of expertise and work streams: user research, information architecture, content strategy, usability, visual design, interaction design, and prototyping
  • Drive thought leadership, design thinking & experience strategy across all projects. Present persuasively and authoritatively to peers and senior leadership, while facilitating collaborative conversation.
  • Partner effectively with business line clients, product & channel management, marketing, analytics, delivery PMO, IT and other teams to strengthen relationships while delivering great work
  • Synthesize each project’s business goals to derive measurable design objectives against which our work will be evaluated for success
  • Consistently deliver work that meets or exceeds the stated business goals and which is clearly and objectively measured and reported to prove our return on design investment
  • Direct people and work efforts across multiple projects to meet business goals; drive excellence in design; deliver ever better work; and manage project timing, financials and talent resources (FTEs, contractors and consultants).
  • Manage, hire and develop a high-performing team with appropriate skills. Motivate and engage team members to ensure peak performance and job satisfaction.
  • Advance and maintain a scalable methodology used across all experience design teams, driving to keep it lean, efficient, effective and repeatable.
  • Manage a consistent, repeatable set of project artifacts (including mock-ups, prototypes, wireframes, journey maps, task flows, site maps, personae, and presentation materials), evolving them in sync across the experience design practice as our business changes and grows
  • Identify, acquire and maintain an affordable, extensible and flexible suite of tools that maximize the teams’ effectiveness, responsiveness and collaboration
  • Evolve the “brand” of the experience design team and create a design-centric culture within the Bank, making ours a team others seek out for collaboration (or even to join our team)

Qualifications

 
Basic Qualifications
  •  Master's degree, or equivalent work experience
  • 10 or more years of experience in project management and leadership activities
  •  Five or more years of managerial experience
 
Preferred Skills/Experience
  • 10+ years experience in digital design with at least 5 years leading and managing both direct and indirect reports
  • Extensive background in all facets of design management including research & strategy
  • Experience working in both traditional waterfall and agile/lean delivery processes
  • Expert in a variety of modern methodologies like design thinking, user-centered design, agile development, lean business methodology, etc.
  • Excellent persuasive verbal and written skills. Ability to facilitate collaborative sessions for input gathering, expansive and reductive ideation, and well-managed design reviews.
  • Whole-brain thinker: analytical and detail-oriented mind-set balanced with strong aesthetic and empathetic sensibility.
  • Track record leading multi-disciplinary teams to deliver multiple and/or large-scale projects.
  • Proven ability to deliver mobile apps, responsive and adaptive web, environmental designs (in-store, displays, signage).
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required in design-focused discipline.
  • Master’s degree or equivalent experience desired in design, marketing, psychology, social science or other relevant field.
  • 5+ years experience pitching agency/consulting new business projects and/or technology products/projects for investment
  • Demonstrated track record of working closely with product management and/or business development team to develop concepts for new capabilities, prove business value, and obtain investment
  • Self-starting problem-solver, able to dive into ambiguous situations, to create order, and to persuade and lead a peer team of business people.
