U.S. Bank asks: Do you know your finances? (SPEECH) [MUSIC PLAYING] (DESCRIPTION) A college campus. Students with book bags walking between large, red brick buildings. Text, US Bank asks, Do you know your finances? (SPEECH) Hey, everyone. Allyson Berger here. And we are on a college campus right now giving up free golf cart rides in exchange for answering a few questions. Let's go find someone to talk to. Excuse me. Hi there. (DESCRIPTION) A woman holds a microphone. She approaches students with a microphone. (SPEECH) How are you doing? Pretty good. How are you? Would you guys like a free golf cart ride in exchange for a few questions? I would love that. All right, let's go. (DESCRIPTION) Allyson talks to two women on a bench. Riding in a golf cart. (SPEECH) So how closely do you track your account balance? Pretty close, actually, because I have to spend on transportation, food, sometimes buying books and what not. Once every day. (DESCRIPTION) Allyson raises her eyebrows. (SPEECH) Really? Every day? Yeah. If there's one money management skill that's important to develop in college, it's the ability to make a realistic budget. (DESCRIPTION) Allyson speaks to the camera alongside graphic blue dollar sign symbols. (SPEECH) Actually, on my notes on my phone, I'll just record stuff down sometimes. So you do it all on your own. You don't use a banking mobile app. You don't use a ledger. You don't use any of those things. No, I don't. Most banks will provide you with a paper ledger. There's also a wide variety of budgeting apps that work as a ledger and also help you build a realistic budget. (DESCRIPTION) Allyson talks besides a graphic white paper and a blue and red pen. (SPEECH) Do you know what an available balance means? Like how much you have? If you take more money out of your account, and someone hasn't deposited that check yet, you could end up being overdrawn? OK. Whenever you withdraw money, use a debit card, or deposit a check, take a second to look at your account to be sure everything is in order. One app you should consider using is your bank's mobile banking app. These apps may help you track your balance, deposit checks, and set up automatic bill pay. (DESCRIPTION) A hand holds a dollar bill and passes it across the screen. Mobile banking app on phone. (SPEECH) Thank you so much. Thank you. You're amazing. Good luck with everything. Thank you. Did you enjoy this golf cart ride? I did. I got a nice little tour of our school, so yeah. And I'll be taking the tips I've learned today and use that in the future. Awesome. As you can tell from driving around this beautiful campus, college is great, but it's an even better time to get a handle on your finances. Now, where's the cafeteria? Because I'm starving.
